The SK-5 carbon steel blade is ground to a thin edge, and then honed and buffed by hand until razor sharp. A carbon steel blade is still the material of choice for many outdoor enthusiasts when it comes to practical use. The easy sharpening compared with chrome steels, even with comparable edge retention, is a huge advantage for many users. The dark coating on the blade provides excellent corrosion protection.
